Summary: Her Watcher hadn’t warned her about the guilt.

It was her first hunt and she hadn’t expected it to be as hard as it had turned out to be. Somehow she had thought that being chosen meant more than it did. Yet the Slayer’s Handbook had left out the fact that just because a vampire is a ruthless monster, it still wears a human’s face. Her Watcher hadn’t warned her about the guilt that would sink in after her first kill.
As she quickly stripped the torn and stained clothes, she couldn’t focus on the encouraging words of her Watcher after she had killed her first vampire. Instead she was focused on the fact that just before the vampire had imploded into ash and dust, there had been a faint glimmer of humanity in the newly risen vampire’s eyes.
She hadn’t expected it and not even the dreams of the past Slayers had warned her of that moment when she was forced to realize that at one time the monsters she was destined to destroy had once been humans. Living and warm humans who had been turned by some stroke of bad luck or misfortune, and it was her destiny to murder them once more.
Faith understood what she had to do and why she had to do it but it still didn’t stop the guilt that she felt as she touched the dark-coloured bruise on her stomach that was already fading. There was a part of her that couldn’t understand how her destiny was supposed to be special now that she realized what she had inherited.
