Day 21 - Another moment

Jan 01, 2011 23:59

This morning, I told my mom that if I do grad school part-time, which I have to if I do it where I really want to be, it will take three years. She said "Oh, that's a long time," and then my grandmother called to say she'd fallen down her cellar stairs before we could discuss anything further. My grandmother's fairly okay ( Read more... )

Stand By Me and Dirty Dancing! Good taste. (I'm not saying The Goonies is bad or anything - I just haven't seen it since I was pretty young and can't really remember it ( ... )

The Goonies isn't bad, but it''s definitely in a very different category from the other two. It's often considered a coming of age film, but I think it's the opposite, really; it's all about having dreams come true and getting to stay a kid for a while longer.

I'd have to do more thinking about coming of age films (and now I probably will!), but it's definitely near the top for me as well. Possibly my favorite thing about the movie is watching River Phoenix's character interact with everyone, because he does a great job of establishing distinct relationships with the others. It's so strange to think of where he could be now, if he'd made it.

It's so frustrating how abortion in TV shows and movies today is often not even presented as an option, or gets immediately dismissed. I have this fondness for New Waterford Girl, though I guess Stand By Me is probably a better film overall. Now I'm looking through wikipedia and seeing all sorts of other good ones... I should add "list of coming-of-age films, possibly in picspam form" to my ever-expanding lists of things to someday post about. (My Summer of Love, I Capture the Castle - even if it isn't labelled that way in wiki, About a Boy - Hugh Grant is less mature than a ten-year old, My Girl...)

Yeah, the only tv abortions that come to mind that weren't referenced as something in the past are from Degrassi and Six Feet Under. SFU aired on HBO, and the Degrassi episode didn't actually air in the states. (What's nice for a show about high school students is that she didn't end up feeling guilty, though I think one of her friends was mad at her about it.)

Romance movies do tend to be written off as silly a little quicker than dramas centred on other things, which I think has some sexist undertones...
