I'm in Savannah now. We're sitting around the table, laptops open all over the place. I still can't type much because I screwed up my arm racing to the revision finish line while trying to recover from a repetitive stress injury, BUT, I ordered voice recognition software and it should be waiting for me when I get home ( Read more... )

Just so you know, it's totally possible to write with voice recognition software. I've been suffering from repetitive stress in my hands for many years now, and typing is one of the worst aggravators for me. Obviously I couldn't stop drawing, so I cut out typing instead. Any writing I do, even this, is done through dictation. It's not as easy or as fast as typing, but it'll definitely save your hands.

What software are you planning on using? I used to use Dragon Naturally Speaking, but it wasn't compatible with Vista so now I'm using the built-in Vista software, which isn't as good. DNS just came out with a patch that works with Vista though, so as soon as I can afford it, I'm planning on picking up the new version. Anyways, I just wanted you to know that you're not alone.

Have a good time in Savannah!

That is really good to know. I'm kind of desperate at this point, like, I don't want to ever be UNABLE to write like this again. Even without a deadline it's killing me!

I got Macspeech or..whatever it's called. The options for Mac seemed pretty limited, sooo...I'm a bit stuck.

To add to what Jackie is saying below, the software she ordered is MacSpeech Dictate which is built on the UNIX version of the Dragon Speech Recognition Engine. While previous versions have had hit or miss reviews, the latest version (about 2 months old) has been getting pretty high marks.

It sounds like so much fun, getting together in one house with a bunch of writers! Can't wait to see the pictures!
