school violence and other stuff

My parents recently moved into a "continuing care community" in Lancaster. That's cool, it was their idea, and the place is really nice. However, I went to visit them just yesterday (Thursday) and since that had been scheduled for a while, I wasn't thinking about the funerals...

The funeral processions for the Amish girls were south of their new ( Read more... )

I also have noticed this seemingly increase in violence. What I'm slowly learning is that it really hasn't gone up (statisticlaly speaking since the 1960's...I have a few billion theories on that subject) as much as the information is more readily avaliable. Let's face it, with TV's and the internet, you can't escape hearing or seeing something about this or that happening in some place you just barely have heard of.
One of my theories is that, prior to 1960, tv's were something of a novelty. The internet was just being invented for the DoD. Information wasn't as easily avaliable, and thereby the world seemed safer. (I kinda doubt that statistic were being taken everywhere on everything before that too...especially in more rural or known problem areas)
Anyways, I could write a paper on the subject but oh well...I could also write a paper on the much lighter subject of very rude people not saying hello when you call them on the phone. ::grumbles::

actually, i am not arguing that violence has, or has not, gone up in general. What i am specifically pointing out is that the violence level in my home city has certainly gotten less *response* than it used to..

When i was young, if my mother had come home to find the back door screen sliced open, and signs of an attempted intrusion into the house, the police would have done more than shrugged it off.

If my mother 9or grandmother) found a broken window to their bedroom, and a large knife just outside that window.. the police would have collected the knife and taken figerprints or something.

Both these things have happened to me, in the last decade, and the police just shrug. A girl i know was dragged into a car off the street, and only got away because a passerby shouted and ran over, and the police just shrug... after all, no one was *hurt* right?

It just seems like its open season on women, in general maybe.. but here in PA especially.
