I did similar the first year I was in post-secondary. I was taking a trip to the other side of the world and had misjudged when finals were. Thankfully, the only course which was effected let me take the exam before the rest of the class. It'd have been an expensive mistake otherwise.
Some schools who deal with a number of "non-traditional" students have realized that the typical intro classes are probably not a good fit for someone who's been passionately studying on their own. But they may not have covered all the key points that the next class in the sequence expects. So they try to test the non-trad student to uncover these points, then work with the instructor to let the student take the course as an independent study, covering only those points.
