And NEVER go to your stylist when you are in emotional turmoil and expect that a new style will make you feel better. I know this from experience.

Many years ago, when the man whom I had loved for years dumped me for another, a hair stylist friend told me that I needed a "fresh look" to help me recover and feel better about myself. Ha! That was a huge mistake. I went from straight hair that I could sit on to short curly hair. I regretted it the moment I saw myself in the mirror.

I'm sorry you regretted it, but I have to say that I've done exactly the same thing on two occasions (and am contemplating a third new style to go with another change in life) and have both times found it empowering and very positive.

And yes, once it was to go from straight hair I could sit on to much shorter than the last time you saw me, and a whole new color, and it has brought me the greatest happiness of my life.

So while I would agree that it isn't *always* a good idea, and would go so far as to say it probably OFTEN isn't a good idea, Never Say Never.

certainly dont do it when you havent considered the idea, or considered a serious change, when you were not in turmoil....

and color is usually much easier to fix than a cut.. a drastic cut cannot be fixed except by time.... a decent colorist can change your color back if you dont like the change.

To be honest I'd given it about 15 minutes' thought total, and it was one of the best things I ever did for myself (getting it cut. Long hair makes me look older, sadder (NOT something I need ANY help with) and fatter. Not that I don't think it can be beautiful (the Man's hair is longer than mine and looks very well on him).

What really matters is that you feel good about yourself.

You make many valid points. I love having long hair, and I want a style that is easy to maintain. I like it long enough to braid in crazy styles. I had it cut just past my shoulders and layered a bit three years ago for a professional broadcasting interview. and would dye it on occasion with L'Oreal Color Pulse mousse, which I cannot find anymore. That said, I'd tried to put in blue streaks for Halloween 2007, but it didn't wash out well. It left inky streaks in grayish-brown hair. So I paid $100 including tip at the salon around the corner, and let me tell you, it was worth every penny! The stylist really listened, suggested a trim to get rid of split ends, added layers, and repaired the damage. When she colored it, she used multiple shades: pale blond and honey-gold for highlights, reddish-blond for contrast, and a sort of caramel color (my original shade). The overall effect added depth and warmth to my hair, restoring shine and volume. Even now, I still have pale streaks in my hair, starting down from my ear, and it looks pretty ( ... )

New Age Salon
Hertel Ave.
Buffalo, NY

Sadly, as it's been so long, I don't remember her name. *my bad* I was so amazed, though, because she had cautioned me that it might not work out well. Thankfully, the color had not been as bad as she had expected (since I had not bleached the hair first). It helped that I'd brought in the package so she could avoid chemical interactions.

oh yes, if you have done any chemical treatment to your hair, always bring the information (and preferably the box) with you to the stylist

I have an awesome stylist, He's been cutting my hair since we were both 18 and he was still in cosmetology school.

Unfortunately he's in Florida...I'm currently in Virginia.

*sighs*

So, I haven't had my hair cut since last October when I was down there. Fortunately it's really curly and fairly long waist length), so it doesn't really show :)

(and because it's long and "difficult" I have a hard time letting an unknown stylist muck about with it)
