as some of you may know i am an amateur Illuminator... that is i am trying to get good enough to do work on scrolls for the SCA. so like any good nerd i own lots of books on the subject ( Read more... )

me and the hedgefund (the laurels in our scriptorium) have been talking about doing everything to scale to teach ourselves the "period" way of things. We're already doing period pigments, vellum etc on special things but the scale isn't always there. So we're working on it after we finish up the scrolls for this reign as a personal challenge.

well, if you dont already have eye strain, this book will do it!
i will never forget when i was drooling over a page in one of the books i have and then noticed that while the page shown in my book was 5x7 the "original size" was 3x4 or something.... grk!

i have been working with some period pigments... getting the glair to actually stick gold leaf down has been infuriating.

ah, we use a glue from england called improved gold body for gold leaf..very, very nice and you can make raised and decorated sections pretty easily.

The thing with gold leaf is that humidity makes it a finicky bitch. In period, their leaf was twice the thickness so they had it easier too....one of my projects "someday" is to make my own leaf....but that is way, way off.
