I hope your finger is ok. Fingers are such an integral part of doing things. I hope your plans aren't messed up too bad.

I've never really thought about lent before, being from a no-particular-affiliation called congregationalists, but I have come to the conclusion that it is a good exercise in self-control (which happens to be a fruit of the spirit ^_^), so I am going to give up reading books during the day. It will be extremely tough because I am an admitted user ^_^ but I have to be tough on myself because there are currently no Readaholics Anonymous groups to help me out. ^_^

grin. and all the other users offer tpo help by taking your books....

yup, a very good exercise in self control (and scheduling...... in some cases, like not eating meat wednesday and friday, which means meal planning in advance)

a lot of people dont so much "give up something" as take on duties. or extra work. like vowing to exercise daily.. or making rosaries (grin) but i am still wanting to give something up this year.. so am still debating....

I'm not Catholic, or even Christian, but I've always admired Lent as an expression of self control - I'm pondering giving up deep-fried foods this year. I'm a Southerner, this is hard.

At least it's not sweet tea.

its one of those things that a lot of people find useful. as stated, as an exercise in self discipline.

one of the reasons my title wasnt "for Christians" but "for those observing Lent"

also, of course. VERY Middle Ages. so for those of us who are SCA its also a way of thinking about what life was like , persona questions, etc....
Lent was HARD then... so mush stuff was off limits, but a lot of it was unavailable because of the season..... so giving up "meat" was.. well.. there wasnt much to have...

I hope your wrist feels better :(

I'm nonChristian, so I wouldn't usually do anything, but mum wants to put my brother and herself on a dairy-free diet, so I'm cutting out dairy to support them.

No butter or cheese....

ouch! oh man, dairy free? i would NOT last long... i wish you good fortune and suggest you look into some vegetarian cookbooks for what substitutes will give you good cooking results.

( i dont put dairy in to my bread machine.. but i put in flax seed meal.. my bread comes out very yummy)

and its my first and second fingers and they do feel better, thanks.

My brother is already stocked up with vegetarian sub-ins ^_^

I won't be missing much by means of liquid milk or ice cream (never could eat ether anyway), but avoiding cheese, butter, and cooked foods with dairy in them is going to get aggravating.

I'm planning on making a lot of sushi and nigiri as take-along foods. Rice, vinegar, avocado, nori, and a little unagi sauce. No dairy in that!

Upon consideration, I think I'll work on my sharp tongue and bad temper. My husband has said on many occasions that I should license it as a lethal weapon. Alas, sometimes I am even proud of having a sharp tongue. Needless to say, this is uncharitable, and possibly a few other things besides ( ... )
