It's all about explaining the name.

"Jane-ye, what the hell kinda name is Jane-ye? You a girl or summthin?" The foreman wiped his brow. "Hey, Brutus. Get Jayne here a shovel. She's got a job. Keep your head down, kid."

Zhenye bit his lip. He was 20AU from home, out of cash and in no fit shape to argue. Guess he was Jayne from now on.

I'm going to sound all smug and boasty, but I totally knew he was going to be Russian from the name of the town in the last chapter.

Another of my favorite male characters is Russian, and Guinny and I were just reading a fic with him yesterday, so my teeny Russian vocab is growing. It helps that I spent three months this summer in the former East Germany, where Russian was compulsory in the schools. Not that I got a whole lot out of it, but at least the rhythms are familiar.

I didn't mean it to be difficult. I studied the language for about six years. I spent six months in Moscow when I was a teenager.

My vocabulary is still decent, my grammar was always very terrible. (And I can still quote the subway announcement for my transfer point. LOL)
