there's no real concensus as to who originated the phrase.

Some people say Elvis Costello. Frank Zappa and Laurie Anderson are popular choices (but both are probably wrong, Laurie Anderson says she heard it from Steve Martin).

Someone on

says they first heard it in 1985 when interviewing Bill Laswell so that predates the Angelina Jolie movie ( ... )
