There are, in my opinion, two problems with emotional extremes.

First, one tends to become obsessive, leading to predictability, a lack of freedom of action, and a tendency not to observe/think.

Second, it tends to focus one's energy in a specific direction, even if such is not one's intent.

I can't imagine mildly hating someone, or tamely hating them. Either it's not hate for me, or it's DIE DIE DIE IN A BIG OLD FIRE. I do feel that it ties me to them, though, and that I'm better off letting it go. If I feel that way about someone, I don't want to be tied to them.
