Animal rights in Japan

There's this pet shop in the town where I work that is really making me mad. They only do small animals, but they've got 3 fully grown rabbits stuffed in a hamster cage so the rabbits can't even turn around properly. No hopping space whatsoever. The bunnies are on display outside of the store, sort of on the sidewalk in front of it. Are Japanese ( Read more... )

As above, the notion of animal rights seems lost in much of Asia in general. Also makes me miserable every time I see someone walking a large dog around suburban Japan, as I'm certain they'd be lucky to have anything more than a tiny backyard in which to keep it. Haven't heard anything pleasant about zoos in Japan either (although the Osaka Kaiyukan/Aquarium is rather kickarse...)

Not sure what you could do about the rabbits, other than buying them and letting them go in a park, heh.

I'd be right up there with you in trying to help these animals out, since it's not too far from me right now...but as it's been said....animal rights don't really exist..

There are no animal rights in Japan (they're still working on human rights). Does this pet store have little cages with dogs or cats in them outside? Those dogs or cats are pets who have been put there by the owners so the pet store people will dispose of them.

Short of buying the rabbits yourself, there's not much you can do, I'd say.

Always happened for years (pet fads cause a deluge of sales in shops, then once it wears off the pets are let loose by their ex-owners), as the notion of animal rights in this part of the world (except for a few engaging in animal rescue work) is an oxymoron.
