baby cloths with cool Japanese images on them.
Hello Kitty..most Sanrio characters. As i am actually buying a bunch of Kuromi baby things for a friend of mine .

Think mascots and characters like that .

I was pregnant while in Japan, so had a baby shower over there. I think I received a jimbei (no idea how to spell it) from EVERY SINGLE GUEST, both Japanese and foreign. I was (and now have) expecting a boy, so my son has something like 17 jimbeis. Happily they're all in different sizes, so he's kitted out til he's 5 or 6 years old. You could pick up a yukata for your friend's little girl ( ... )

That carved pregnant dog sounds like an excellent gift... I found the temple you were talking about, Obitoke-dera. I am definitely going to have to check that out!

I will definitely be buying a lot of omamori, I think they make excellent souvenirs anyway. But getting one from Obitoke-dera is an excellent idea.

Yes, koi flags! They are expensive but will hold up for years. These are a good present for someone with kids of any age (like your own mom.)
I see a lot of babies at my work and my favorite clothes are animal ear hoodies, or badassery like camo and crosses.
Any shopping center (or Jusco) will have a baby sections with tons of cute shoes and Engrish onesies.
