I was in Korea from June 23, 2005 until October 30, 2006. I was an English teacher there. I was fired from my hagwon (long story). Now my sister wants to teach English there. Well, I gave my sister some pointers about the company. I do want to go back to Korea myself. I miss it a lot. I haven't found any jobs that look good. I do wonder if ( Read more... )

As you probably know, the hagwon scene is always iffy. Often it seems that the good are out numbered by the bad 10 to 1. You might want to check out http://epik.knue.ac.kr/ for the EPIK program. Plus you can try to work for the public schools directly. Timing is important. The semesters begin in February and August, I think. If you go for a hagwon job, it's definitely a good idea to come up first, if you can afford it. Contracts usually end at the end of the month into the very beginning the next month, so time your arrival to be available then.

I recommend Canadian Connexion (www.canconx.com). They place people with the board of education in Jeollanamdo, Korea's southernmost province. Because we're not in Seoul, we get a bit more money and a fair bit of vacation (1.9 and 5 weeks). The hours are also 9-5, which I think is much better than what people tell me they have to work in a hagwon. They also give you a 10 day orientation to give you a a bit of a heads up on what life as an English teacher here is going to be like, but mostly to let you get accustomed to the new environment.

The next hiring intake is in April, I think. Another option is the EPIK Program, but they're disorganized and they only offer 2 weeks of vacation.
