I missed American food when I was in chile. It was aweful.
I live in the hometown of Dr. Pepper thesedays, and I could not live without it. We still have a soda fountain here, and blue bell ice cream + dublin Dr. Pepper is hard enough to get out of state, but I recall just looking for it out of the country was impossible. In Chile, I was attempting to explain it as a cola to someone and they kept trying to ask me if it was a real doctor. We found it in china though!
Don't worry man...you're not alone. Every place I've been posted at in the past 4 years has had great food on its own (China to Italy to Nepal) but I always end up getting hankerings for certain comfort foods, whether they be American (a good ol' greasy truck stop/diner style breakfast...Utz Potato Chips...and damn you for putting that picture of Boston Market up there :) or ethnic food that either isn't available (Mexican usually) or isn't a really good idea to eat in your local country (sushi).
Then again, I'm in Kathmandu now...so I'm just happy when I eat out and don't get the runs.
I went through the same thing when I moved to Germany 10 months ago... now that I am pregnant... don't even get me started... there is a box on it's way here with poptarts and other goodies that I miss... Tell ya what, Bring me some Cheerios, and I'll get you Dr. Pepper, and good ol' southern cooking...
I was pregnant last year here in Denmark, and there is nothing sadder than when you are having a serious craving for something that you just can't get (like blueberry frosted pop-tarts or pizza flavored goldish!). And then you try to find something that's kinda close, but it just doesn't cut it.
But good to hear you have people on the other side (of the ocean, that is) who are willing to send you care packages.... god bless 'em!
OH WOW! Blueberry poptarts and pizza goldfish were exactly what I was craving too!!! I seriously called some people crying to get them sent to me. I hope I still want them when they get here, is the only problem...
Well then there must be some kind of important nutritional properties in Pop-Tarts and Goldfish.... or why else would we have craved them, right? (Wonder if the same goes for those Seven-Layer Burritos from Taco Bell I always wanted...). Am sure my little theory is oh-so-popular among midwives and ob/gyn's. ;)
Hope your package arrives soon while your cravings are still strong... but hey, if not.... they've got a long shelf life, and I'm sure the cravings will come back.

I really miss good ol' American diner food, where you can get breakfast served at any hour. Mm mm!
