Sometimes I find it's a little cheaper just to ask my family to ship me a big box of my favorite foods. Once you average out the shipping costs and everything, it usually comes out about equal, but it depends on what they send, how much it costs and weighs, etc. :P The one problem I have is that sometimes the boxes get really beat up on the way to Germany and my Reese's Pieces spill everywhere!
But to answer your question, no, you're not alone! We have an American grocery store here (and also a WalMart, but that's going to close soon...), and it's not TOO expensive, unless you want things like frosting (6 euros for frosting? I don't think so).
I miss Mexican food. They try to make it here at Mexican restaurants, but it is kind of gross and not nearly the same. *sigh!* And mmm, Boston Market corn bread. ^_^
I think one of the only times I ever got food poisonining in my life was eating at a Mexican Restaurant while I was living in Berlin...I would always try to make my own at home but I always felt that 4 euros for a package of tortillas that werent really that good seemed ridiculous.
Agreed. I'm gonna see how much it would cost my family to ship me a big ol' box...probably too much. I should just go have a Turkish pizza instead. If you get it with feta cheese and spicy sauce, it's like a Turkish burrito.....*sigh!*
Oh, you are NOT alone!! I'm in Spain, and I miss tons of American products... To name a few: Pop Tarts, Lucky Charms, Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, Reese's Peanut Butter cups, Cake Mixes and frosting... I would add Peanut Butter and Maple Syrup, but I have actually found those sold at regular supermarkets for a few years now :)
And Boston Market!!! It's funny because since the first times my spanish husband traveled with me to the states, he fell in love with Boston Market!! :)
No, definitely not alone. There's a lot of American products I miss. It's more my American family and friends who don't understand because the food is so good in France. Yes, I paid 5€+ for a box of Poptarts and I'm not ashamed to admit it. I'm originally from Texas so I definitely miss those home-style restaurants. I also miss good cheesecake and bakery style white cake with buttercream that I don't have to make myself. And, yes, the junk/snack food is also missed like Reese's PB Cups, Archway Cookies, especially the lemon ones, Oatmeal Pies, PB Cap'n Crunch, Eskimo Pies, Fritos and the list goes. We have really good stuff in the U.S. I've done my part to convince a few people in my little corner of the world by inviting them over for a typically American meal. :)
I've been in the Netherlands for a really long time, and there are still some things I really miss. I shell out the big bucks at the American/British food stores for things like Cream of Tartar and Baking Soda (unknown in NL).
Things I really miss: Quaker Instant Oatmeal packets, Annie's Alfredo, and bit-o-honey.
