I know what you're talking about. I am making a fraction of what I made before moving to the States, and gave up quite a bit. However, my improved mental state much makes up for a lack of possessions and security.
I worry about that stuff constantly. At the same time, I look at where I'd be if I'd settled down and bought a house two or three years ago, as I'd planned: although I might have some equity in the house, I'd also still be doing a job I was burnt out on, and still in the US as life there becomes increasingly surreal and unpleasant. You only get one life. Might as well not be miserable, if you can help it. Saving for the future is important. So is living in the present.
I'd rather be having the adventure, but I guess even adventurers have doubts. I would rather be learning more where I am, but perhaps this is the time to try and do something about it. I'm a terrible procrastinator :-)
The US economy is undoubtedly the best in the world. Having lived there for 15 years, I acquired a career, some money and lots of experience. Social life in the US however, was rather lackluster for me when compared to Europe. I chose for the latter not only for my own sake, but because I see everyday how the social worth of people is more important than the size of their mortgages and their bank accounts. I don't want my children to be just grist for the mill, there is much more to life than chasing monetary fulfillment. This being said, if I ended up into some dire straits, I'd move back to the US rather quickly. Nowadays it's easy to move around quite a bit.
