Well, I can't get the Japanese phone company to let me hold for even 10 minutes. I just get the call back later message most times of day. This is why I no longer have a telephone or internet access in my apartment.

They've started doing the same thing in Britain now too and it makes me nearly homicidal.

You still do most everything in person here where I am. We even go pay our internet bill in person. I so love not having to sit around on the phone getting aggravated with automated voice responses that never seem to match up with the issue I'm calling about.

Fortunately, I've never had to call any customer service companies here in Germany. Back in America, I'd usually just get a version like your old version. Often with "Or, if your problem is not covered by any of these, then please stay on the line and a person will be with you shortly" ('shortly' being anywhere from 5 mins to an hour.)

I did call the American Consolate here in Germany, and had a lot of trouble finding what I was looking for (apparently, you go through 'Passport problems/issues/questions/concerns' to find out about getting married). They used the standard system you guys had too, though, but that's an American owned and run establishment, not a German one.

(As I don't speak much German, if we need to call a support line for any reason, my German fiancé does it, so I have no idea how the runaround is.)
