The tourist visa (stamp in your passport upon arrival in the UK)given to US citizens is good for six months.

I got 6 months, but nobody was checking how long I was really staying, and on leaving, they didn't even look into my passport. Well, I'm not American, I'm Latvian and it's considered worse, so I guess I've been lucky.

You can stay up to six months... amaterasu December 8 2001, 05:21:08 UTC
...on a tourist visa, but if you a)say you're only going to be in the country a few weeks, or b) get into a fight with immigration (yes, I've done both), you'll get a different stamp.

Once, I got a visa that was only god for three months (but you can apply for an extention up to six months), and now I've got a visa that gives me six months, then kicks me the hell out for good (unless I get married or another visa).

Whatever you do, DON'T GET INTO A FIGHT WITH IMMIGRATION!!! (It's a long story, believe me).
