You tell your advisor you're getting in on those publications. And you won't take No for an answer.
That's part and parcel of the "publish or die" attitude of academia. You tell people what you're going to do, they try and stop you, you don't let them.
The one thing I do know is that I dont want that kind of academic job. I'm not interested in any way in getting a position where the pub or perish mentality will eat me. I am much more interested in two possible lines of work. One is the CSU type school where my teaching will be primary and publication requirements are much more reasonable-especially since I am producing government reports atm which WOULD normally count as pubs for CSU type jobs. For that I am going to pursue the thing I was talking about, but I can't do that fellowship until I am advanced (which if my adviser has anything to say about it will be around Spring of next year, just in time to apply for my 5th year

and if I don't get the teaching internship/fellowship deally, then I will try for the pedagogle fellowship we have here at the school next summer, and ask to teach my own class in the summer and TA. Hopefully I can also get picked for professors who shouldnt be adverse to me asking a bunch of questions about course design etc.
