This feels like it was written based on an ancient myth or legend, like Odysseus's wife fending off suitors or something...eh, I dunno.

I think you're correct. The symbolism is quite clear. The weaving, the suitors, the years, the waitinga and the warrior. Read the poem again when I read your comment and differently. Odysseus!
