After a week of being sick, then 10 days of the kids being sick (and Bennett staying home from preschool for a week) and then guests for 6 days..... I am off my rhythm. Slowly getting back to it. At least I'm in my office attempting to email all the people, pay my loans on time, RSVP to all the parties, book all the plane tickets, and maybe sneak a ( Read more... )

Will you be anywhere near a larger city in Kansas? There should be plenty of farmers' markets going on where you can get what you need. Around some of the small towns you might find Amish (etc.) markets or roadside stands where you can find healthier meats & eggs too. That's the case in Iowa at least.

We are in the western part of the state. I will ask about a farmers market, though we will be in 1200 person town, one that I've heard is dying a slow death. We're in town for the fair. Which.... yay? I don't know. I fear for what they'll try to feed my kids....

I am totally pessimistic about it, but I know it won't be as bad as I fear.

That sounds like the town my inlaws are in. The fair food will most likely be disgusting. Any kind of farmers' market you can find will be your best hope. Or if they get the Schwan truck maybe you can put in a special request for a few things. I keep wishing I had a chance to go to the Amish roadside stands near my inlaws but we never have.

I asked Adam about a farmers market in the area and he said no. D: I'm going to have to do some research. I need to have back ups to suggest - rather than just rudely refusing everything.

the food situation is tough. i eat whatever people put on the table because i find it pretty distasteful to walk into the home of someone who has graciously prepared a meal for us to share and proclaim that their effort isn't good enough. let me know if you find a way around it... aside from pretending you are a vegan with grain allergies. :)

I feel the same way: accept with graciousness! But now that I break out in hives..... I just can't do it. I'll find a way. I figure I'll let them know, and then roll with what I'm given. Meet them in the middle some how.

Dont explain it as a fad diet...just say you've developed an allergy to corn and wheat...and then eat the mass produced eggs and meat available. It's a short trip, and you need to eat something!

Yeah, that's likely what will happen. And it's not a fad.... but, well, you know.

You break out in hives now from grains? Have you looked in to why this is happening? I mean, haven't you been eating them your whole life? Sorry, didn't mean for three questions in a row.

Good luck with your trip. I hope that it is enjoyable and that everyone is well soon.

Apparently humans aren't meant to eat grains. And the grains we do eat are significantly different than what our ancestors ate. I went off them for a while and lost a bunch of baby weight and now, having purged them from my system, I find I am super sensitive. Apparently this is pretty common. It's mostly wheat and corn that do it for me. Some rice, so far, hasn't been too bad.

Makes me REALLY wary of feeding anything wheat based to my kids. If only I could get my husband to stop eating it and feeding it to the kids.

What about taking a huge slab of salmon with you? You could take it to share as a Washington treat, but then when the Midwesterners aren't into it, there's more for you. ;)

That's a thought, but not feasible, alas. Too many to feed. Not a direct flight (fly to Denver, 6 hour drive to Hoxie). It's going to be an adventure, and I'm looking forward to seeing places I've never been before. It'll be great to see new parts of the world. Even if I moan about things.
