Lines. Sand.

You know how a lot of people have those lines that just can't be crossed? Or like, are all 'I love Ford and America, and if you like Chevy and Satan we can't be friends?' Well: if you like Twilight, I'm down. If you can recognize that it's problematic, we're cool. If you can't..... well, I have nothing to say to you. Nothing. Nope. None.

oh my, how funny! just yesterday i saw the stupid (it was so bad i initially thought it was a spoof!) preview for the new movie and i started thinking about the conversation we had a couple years ago. i actually searched my e-mail to find the link to your post that prompted the discussion. i re-read it last night. today at work, surrounded by middle school girls, i was reflecting on that very conversation.

gotta run to a class but i wanted to comment quickly just because the timing of this post is uncanny.

Do you still think that the series isn't a big deal? You (rightly) point out a lot of other problematic films, but I still maintain that the ubiquity of this film, it's cavalier and blatant anti-feminist themes/characters/everything are more insidious, especially given the trend over the last 10-15 years of mainstream gender polarization.

let's just say that my perception shifted upon quite a few discussions of the series with its younger readers. if i could continue believing that for the tween audience there is a high level of recognition of the supernatural aspect of the series, i would stand behind what i said 2 years ago. however, from my discussions with them i can see that the supernatural is almost irrelevant. they view it as a romance series and edward cullen's stalker ways are "romantic." *shudder*.

Hey, loving trashy lit is fine by me. But..... you don't see anything problematic? Nothing? Do you think that Bella is a character that your girls should emulate in any way? And how do you feel about the race issues in the books?

Let's not break up.

Thinking further.... I think the movies are worse than the books. Or, they expose the worst more easily. I may also feel differently when my kids are older. It's REAL easy to be all hard core when I get to pick out their clothes, books and games. I dunno. My knickers are in less of a bunch this morning. I need a hobby that is not my brain.

“Harry Potter is about confronting fears, finding inner strength and doing what is right in the face of adversity. Twilight is about how important it is to have a boyfriend.”
