Theology in the news

I shared this on Facebook, but I love seeing theology presented in a clear, accurate way:
Glenn Beck's liberation theology obsessionGlenn Beck and his ilk frighten me with their cult of disinformation. Liberals are not entirely off the hook either - most people present the info they want to present (like me! here! right now!). But Beck's grasp of ( Read more... )

The only way I would ever consider going back to Christianity (which I won't) would be under the auspices of liberation theology. All the Pauline/Reformation stuff seems to me to totally corrupt what was great about Jesus.

Word. I get so depressed reading all the church fathers. Then I dive into feminist liberation theology and it's like a bath of revivifying waters.

No liberation theology I have ever studied has said anything like this. There may be some subset of liberation theology that makes these claims, since I wouldn't try to prove a negative, but it's certainly not universal.

The Family is not liberation theology. Collectivism is not the only basis for Lib Theo. Or even the main one. Obama did attend a church heavily influenced by LT (it just keeps getting shorter and shorter) but he himself has not said anything or done anything that suggests it alone is his driving influence. What I'm upset about is Beck's strident lack of knowledge on this subject matter. He is spreading disinformation through ignorance.

I most deeply believe in collective theology, but not at the expense of the individual - I know, paradox right? Well, that's the crux of it. We save ourselves, and each other. (I think this is one of the major sound bites of my own personal theology.)

And just as much as I love LT and use it as the basis of my academic work, and personal theology, any tool in the hand of a nut job is going to do a number on people.

I didn't say The Family is Liberation theology. I said that what it shares in common with Collective Salvation theology is that both are looking at ways to use earthly means to forcibly control other people's behavior. (Laws, people in power, etc ( ... )
