Much sighed as he rolled over in his bunk, he stared at all the empty beds that surrounded him. He wondered what had happened to their missing inhabitants. What had become of Robin Hood’s famous outlaws?
Much himself had learned when the king returned and he was given Bonchurch that there was a hole inside him that no amount of good food and baths and comforts could fill, and he had returned to the forest to once again aid those who justice had forgotten.
Little John it seemed had had the same idea for thought he was a frequent visitor of the court of Aquitaine, he lived in a small cottage in the same village as Alice and Little Little John. Apparently the village children were enthralled by the old woodsman and his wonderful tales of a brave and noble outlaw and his merry men.
Allan, the tavern trickster with his cheeky grin and irresistible charms, surely must have found his way to some girl’s heart, and Much hoped he had learned his lessons in life. The man had betrayed his friends for money and Much was certain he now had it, but did not spend it on idle things like drink and gambling, well not all of it. Maybe sometimes when he’d had a bit too much he’d giggle and sit his little girl on his knee and she’d listen wide eyed while he told her about the best friends he’d ever had and their time in a forest called Sherwood.
As the night continued Much’s thoughts turned to Will, the man who had crafted the very camp he lay in now, and Djaq, the Saracen, who had found home so very far away. He imagined that they lived in a splendid villa filled with pale marble and exotic smells and the tinkling of fountains. There were pigeons in cages lining the walls cooing softly and a small children with Djaq’s eyes and Will’s smile ran through the airy passages. Will’s skin would be tanned and Djaq’s hair would be longer, but they would both still remember their adventures in England.
He turned to face skyward, Robin, he had thought when he had first come to the forest, would marry Marian and live a long and happy life as lord of Locksley. That dream had ended in the Holy Land. His oldest and dearest friend and master had been destroyed by Marian’s death and now even the faithful villagers doubted if he had ever existed. Robin, his master, his leader, his friend was nothing more than legend. Even Much his faithful companion was not sure of what had happened, but he liked to think that his master and his love watched over them all from Heaven.
