Two questions

My roommate is doing a project on portrayals of people of the Middle East in mainstream American film. She's sick of watching military movies; does anyone have recommendations? Maybe something in a romantic comedy? All the military ones get at the same terrorist stereotypes, so it would be interesting to see some more quotidian examples. So even ( Read more... )

If the guy was Aaron Echart, I think that movie was called Towelhead, though the imdb thinks its title is Nothing Is Private.

This is not a film recommendation, but I strongly encourage your roommate to have a look at "Orientalism" by Edward Said, who is a historical theorist, but he did an extremely extensive amount of work on the common conception of Middle Eastern and other peoples in the popular discourse of the West.

In action movies, there's True Lies, I guess. I remember that movie coming in for criticism even at the time, though, so it's probably more of the terrorist shit.
