Through the gate redux.

I know it's never good to judge a series on its opening couple of episodes, mainly because they very rarely tend to be the best the show has to offer - but sometimes it's difficult to not judge... I mean, it's human nature innit? And in that sense I'm a bit disappointed that my attempt to re-evaluate Stargate SG-1 (blame the Atlantis cancellation) ( Read more... )

I'm inclined to agree with you here. It's been a good few years since I last watched any of SG1 (although your promise of full frontal nudity has tempted me to revisit it) but I remember it as being amusing with some decent plot-lines, but not especially engaging. I seriously doubt that any of the characters could have moved me to tears by getting themselves infected with parasitic brain worm thingies.

I was watching SG1 at around the same point in time that I was watching Charmed. That probably says a lot.

Incidentally, if you haven't seen A Dog's Breakfast yet you should check it out. It's worth it just to see Teal'c as a desperate on-line dater...

Yeah, that was more or less the impression I had of it as well. I just thought that starting from the beginning may make the series grab me in a way that it has yet to do. I'm crossing my fingers though.

Charmed? Ouch.

I'm definitely going to watch A Dog's Breakfast at some point soon. The trailer for it is hilarious.

I have to say, being the SG1 fan that I am, re-watching S1 last year had me thinking, "why did I watch this?". I blame it on the fact that it started on Showtime in it's first year and thus was trying too hard to be awesome and hence the naked womens and bad introductions, the whole Sam being "I am woman, hear me roar", and the like.

S2 for me was what got me really liking the show, it went into the mythology better, and the O'Neill love knows no bounds. All I can say is, don't give up. But if you do, at least watch S4 E6, "Window of Opportunity". One of the most hilarious episodes just because of Teal'c, yes Teal'c. He's usually the character who has me laughing the most.

As for how emotional the show can be, all I can say is S5 E21. It still makes me cry when I watch it, even though I know what happens, guh.

I promise O'Neill, Teal'c, Jackson, and Sam will become the "treble-punch of Sheppard, McKay and Beckett". When I watch Sheppard on SGA, I find myself going, "oh that was soooo an O'Neill moment". :-)

Ah, I thought it being on Showtime had something to do with it. Kowalsky's rather unpleasant demise was another instance of rather crowbarred-in adult content that seemed to jarr with the rest of it. And Sam's character introduction was pretty embarrassing, yes. It's why I'm purposely skipping the third episode Emancipation, because it sounds absolutely awful.

I'm definitely not going to drop the show yet. While it's had a shaky start so have other series that I really like and I feel it'd be unfair to not give it a chance, and like I say, there's just enough there to keep me interested. I have heard that things improve with season two, so I'll certainly stick around until then at any rate!

As for Teal'c being an unexpected source of hilarity, I very much liked his funnier moments in Midway, particularly him and Ronon watching The Three Stooges.

Some time ago I borrowed the first SG-1-season from a friend because I thought I should give it serious go after all those years with randomly zapping in, catching bits here and there and never being too impressed... and I'm still stuck in the middle of the fifth episode. Or was it the sixth? Ah, I don't know...

And yeah... I think I'm quitting for good, it's just no use. Even though he (well, and more people on earth) said that it's not very good in its first season and that the show will pick some time afterwards, I just don't think it's worth my time. I've already seen so many shows in my life which "get good in the second season", but those were at least enjoyable and fun to watch even they weren't in full flight yet. All I see here are stereotyped characters babbling stereotyped dialogue in stereotyped plots from the stack. And of course there's the obligatory "feministic" episode... which wants to be bold and meaningful about the topic but just feels very immature and childish ( ... )
