Yet, this is so significant precisely because it's mundane. When someone is mentally unwell, you don't "save them from themselves". You don't. It can't be done. All you can do is be there for them, and respond to their cry for help. This is why the bridge sequence in 4.06 is so satisfying for me personally -- because it doesn't offer up any idealistic messages about beating mental illness.
I would like to marry this remark and have its wee little remarkable babies.
Side note, my icon is entitled, "If I told you to jump off a bridge would you do it?"
Riiight, I absolutely did think about the Elena/Stefan scene mirroring this one while watching, though I didn't do such a thoughtful analysis of it (even in my head haha).
Essentially: I LOVE YOUR THOUGHTS. It's incredible to see the mirroring of situations, but how they're transformed by the characters as well as how it shows Elena's progression from Season 1 to now. See, this is why I've been so impressed with the writing this season -- the mirroring and character growth ahoy.
Haha, cheers. I'm glad I'm not alone in seeing the mirroring.
Agreeeeeeeee with your love for this season (so far). I feel like the show has never been more about Elena than it is right now, which probably explains it. ;P And this last episode has convinced me that Julie & co. truly GET what they're doing with Elena's arc, thank God.
def not alone, but your meta outmetas all the fans in the yard <3

such a relief, right. i'm not sure if that makes up for the worry caused by s3, but at least it now frames it as an in-character delay on her part because she had to keep trying to ~fix it and keep the good image alive while she was alive.
(also hi can i just express that i'm coming out of write-shakespeare-essay mode and i'm done with it until tomorrow when i have to write the conclusion and edit it before submission. THEN IT IS BREAK TIME WOOOT.)

(oooh, good luck! and congrats on the impending break! \o/ we are going to do things.)
I noticed the mirroring too! Although would not have managed to put it into words like this that make a cohesive whole!
The best part of the episode for me was seeing Elena realise that for all she was 'ready to die' before, she sure as hell isn't now. I really enjoyed that the choice was hers and that nobody actually made it for her. This makes a pleasant change. Perhaps the season will end with everyone sharing all the information with each other and making choices based on what they want. In my dreams....
Heh, thanks for thinking my thoughts are cohesive! ;P
I really enjoyed that the choice was hers and that nobody actually made it for her. Absolutely this. It's a neat inverse of the pre-series accident, wherein Elena was saved (both by Stefan and her father) without having any choice in the matter -- and then had to spend the next three seasons trying to be worthy of her father's sacrifice. In this episode, she doesn't owe anyone anything.
I may be inexplicably optimistic, but I think there's a good chance of your dream scenario happening! Already this season is exceeding my expectations about a lot of things.
