I also wonder how much of the way she looked at him was due to the actual saving, and how much was due to the fact that she was finally seeing him without all her baggage of guilt and self-loathing getting in the way. Oh, good point. "My head is clear" indeed.
UGH, I hate reading posts on phone. Then I forget to reply :(.
This is essentially a life-affirming scene, but in hindsight I can't not notice how much Elena's argument in favour of life is informed by her own trauma, by her personal belief that life is something you have to "deserve", to keep "fighting" for.
Yes, this! Also, it's interesting how Elena only talks issues through with Stefan? I mean, all the "meaningful" (and often naive) conversations are with Stefan. That's not how she deals with Bonnie, Caroline, Jeremy or Damon. With Stefan, they need everything explicitly. I wonder why.
In S1 Elena takes it upon herself to "save" Stefan, not physically but "morally", emotionally, spiritually, &c. &c. and later on in S3 she'll try exactly the same thing on a much larger scale, to her own detriment ("there will be no next time", she said -- but there was).I guess this is why I have such a visceral reaction to people being all over Damon being Elena's "savior" in this episode? I know that objectively he did save her... but I don't

I always assumed that at their best this was a sign of their good communication and trust? Elena didn't feel comfortable letting most people in after the crash, but she did allow Stefan to see her during her depressed moments.
Alternatively, you could see conversations like that as evidence of how idealistic their relationship was. "We talked, it was epic..." ;P

I know that objectively he did save her... but I don't want it framed like this, I don't want the codependency to develop. Fair. That's the opposite of what I want, too. tbf I don't think this is just Elena repeating her old mistakes, but

That's what I was thinking? Not because I don't believe functional couples talk things through, but because it doesn't seem to be Elena's MO in her friendships. Elena tends to leave things unsaid, but with Stefan, she was just trying so hard to do it right. I'm not saying Stefan made her do it or anything. It's just fascinating to observe how Elena shapes herself in this relationship. Stefan has high expectations of her, true, but she has even higher expectations of herself.
tbf I don't think this is just Elena repeating her old mistakes, but I guess we'll see better next episode.
Frankly, it's fandom that got me worried, not the show. I should quit tumblr :(.
Point. What's with their hips never touching? What are you doing, man.
IKR? So awkward. I don't remember much of my first watching of s1, but THIS got stuck in my head.
We know the dude can't handle getting everything he wants. It will

Man, latter half season 1 feels so far away at this point (and like another show, lol) that I didn't even begin to think about these two scenes in connection to one another. You are so great, how do you meta? Don't really have anything to add other than that I really do hope that we see evidence and stories about this in upcoming episodes:
at this point I want to say that Elena's S1-3 arc of linking "life" with "goodness" is truly done, officially so with this episode.
I'm so frustrated and tired of this show's weird stance on vampirism RE: "death" and "goodness" and their innate right to survive etc etc WHEN ALMOST ALL OF ITS PROTAGONISTS ARE VAMPIRES (I swear it's like they forget this half the time) and I'd like it to be killed dead.
