I'm planning to go to Bristol and Bath in September. How many days should be ideal? Should I spend more days in one place than the other? Are there absolute must sees?
Haven't been to Bristol, but Bath is wonderful! It's small, so you don't need much time -- I'd say one to two days. The "must-see" is of course the old Roman baths. I also really recommend the free walking tours (see bathguides dot org dot uk/when-where.html -- couldn't post the actual link because it got marked as spam)
They're both pretty laid back! Bath is smaller but the architecture is lovely, I'd really give it one night, maybe two depending on your arrival and departure times. Bristol is larger, but it isn't a very touristy area. There's a really large Suspension Bridge that is cool to go over. There's a lot of shopping in both towns if you're into that.
Will you be on public transit or have a car? If you've got a car, I'd check out some other locations nearby in Somerset. Wells (cute village), Glatsonbury (for the Tor), Cheddar (for the Gorge and Cheddar Caves if you're into that) and/or the Wookey Hole Caves. If you're near enough as well, Cardiff in Wales isn't THAT far of a go from there either and it's got more to see and do than Bristol and Bath.
I lived in Bristol for about eight months and think it's a city which main sights you can check off pretty quickly in one or two days but where is a lot more to explore if you just take the time
