European trip with a child

My husband and I are thinking about taking another trip to Europe in the spring, most likely mid-May, if we do it. We have been to various countries throughout Europe on two different trips in the past, but this time, we would be taking our almost 2 year old daughter. We realize that we are not going to be able to move around as much as we normally ( Read more... )

At her age, I really don't think she's anything to take into consideration, as far as where to go. She's not yet old enough where what you do is really going to mean anything to her, it will just fall on you guys/her toys to entertain her. However, I wouldn't advise bringing her to A'dam. She doesn't need to be inhaling all that pot (the whole touristic area of the city reeks of it, there's no escape; there's at least one coffeeshop on every block) and the city is nearly always super-crowded, it's just not a good place for a small child. Athens is gorgeous and one of my favorite cities, definitely recommended, and Budapest is another favorite. Vienna is nice, but personally I found it a little underwhelming. But maybe you could do something with like, Budapest/Vienna/Bratislava/Prague/somewhere in south-east Germany kinda deal, stuff like that? It's in a nice cluster so you wouldn't be traveling real far with the little one.

I like this plan! If you do the Budapest/Vienna/Bratislava/Prague tour, I also recommend Salzburg, which is a wonderful smaller town. Munich is close as well.

We went to Munich and Prague on our last trip. Not that I didn't like those cities enough to visit again, but we were hoping to try some new places this time around. Vienna and Budapest might be nice, though...

We definitely know that we can't really plan our trip around what she wants to do because she will be so young, but we were just curious as to how difficult it is to travel with a child in this way. We've taken her on several car trips, anywhere from a couple of hours away to 9 hours away but have never flown with her.

I don't have any solid advice as I've never traveled with a toddler, but I do have a couple of thoughts. The first is that yes, I would predict that train travel with a younger child would be easier than plane travel, if for no other reason than it's easier to move around, and there's usually more space ( ... )

greece is wonderful but Athens doesn't need more than 3 days or so...go to a couple of the non-party islands, they are a beautiful part if the world

Vienna would also be very child friendly and is a stunning city
