I'm planning to go to Rome for about a month, starting in late August/early September. As I'm going to be there for a fairly long time, and will be there for an internship, I'd like accommodation that's cheap but also comfortable and not too noisy. For that price, you could rent a room easily! I rented a central room for a month in March-April for 650 euro a month, but if you're willing to live further out I saw rooms of about 350-400 in Trastevere!

(Incidentally, do check ahead if you book through Craigslist: I had a horrible experience with the room I rented. It was advertised by the landlord as a room in a 2-bed flat, but ended up being a room in a 4-bed flat with 5 people living in it, PLUS girlfriends, PLUS the random crasher in the living room, PLUS the landlord's tenant from another apartment across Rome who was allowed to come use the internet for some reason, PLUS the landlord who did his laundry. The room itself was fine and lovely, but I ended up leaving 2 weeks early when I realized that my housemates intended on smoking joints and playing music in the living room until 5 am every night.)

Do you recommend Craigslist in general, for finding rooms? I'll definitely have a look - thank you for the advice! I'm sorry you had such a bad experience...

I'm so sorry for my ridiculously late reply, but thank you for your advice! It's been really helpful, as I'm still looking into options. Those links should be useful. I think you'e probably right about staying in a hostel and then possibly checking out flats and houses in person.
