The permit is good for one year, so don't get it until just before your trip. Yeah it's probably a good idea to make sure you've covered by some sort of insurance, just in case. If you book the car through one of those online sites they normally offer that kind of thing, I'm pretty sure. I think you'd have to check with the place renting it, if it came with the emergency stuff. If you have a cell phone, you should be fine; just make sure you take note of any important useful numbers for that sort of scenario before setting off. I'm really not sure what you mean about scams. 0_o

Thanks so much for this info. Very helpful. For scams, just like every now and then you hear about a scam where someone gets in a fender bender with you only to steal your valuables or something. One of my guidebooks was very "beware women driving alone in southern Spain!" but they didn't go into a ton of detail so I wondered if that was a concern.

I'm pretty sure the guidebooks kind of heap it on way over the top when it comes to that stuff. For some reason, even though the people who write them are supposed to be seasoned travelers (why else would you write a travel-guide??), it seems like they tend to be really clueless about a lot of the cultural-type stuff. Like I've seen a lot of people say that the guidebooks are responsible for the idea that shorts are not worn in Europe, and other utterly bogus things like that. I dunno, maybe the safety excessiveness is a liability thing? Tell people it's not a problem and then something happens to someone and they try to sue for misinformation ("but this guide said it was safe!!"), you know how sue-happy the US is... *shrugs*

Me and my family rented a car in Barcelona when we were trapped there from the volcano last year, and it's really similar to renting in the US and Canada ( ... )

You should go to Salamanca! its in Castilla y Leon (not exactly southern spain) but its lovely. I am studying there now. Andalucia is really pretty though, you'll have fun :) and I don't see any reason why traveling alone would make you a target.
