i'm about to do a last minute flight booking and stuff (with departure in three days and duration of three days) to either Dublin or Edinburgh. the problem is that i can't choose.

Dublin:
i've been there before and so i've seen most of the things worth to see (i think), counting: st. patrick's cathedral, kilmainham gaol, the general post ( Read more... )

^what should i do in..., !question(s), scotland: edinburgh, ireland: dublin, ^where should i go (in...)

Edinburgh! Dublin's good too, but if you've never been to Edinburgh then YOU MUST GO. Yes, you can see the castle! And you can walk the Royal Mile between the castle and Holyrood Palace and then go see the palace, too. There's tons of great architecture, bookshops and cafes . . . I think you'll like it.

What is the Royal Mile? Sounds interesting, thanks!

The Royal Mile is the street that goes between the castle and the palace. It's the heart of Old Town, and full of history, shops, architecture, etc.:

EDINBURGH!!!

My family's from Dublin so I've spent time there, and I live in Edinburgh.

If you want info PM me with questions I can advise you on pretty much anything Edinburgh related.

If you know anything about nice budget places to eat (there's a self catering kitchen at the hostel so that's the main thing I'll do) or have a hot chocolate since I don't drink coffee - and most importantly, do you know good secondhand bookstores?

Baked Potato for veggie haggis and other veg goodies (always packed, really good food), and I had a hot chocolate at Chocolate Soup on golden mile when I was there. Not too bad really, although a local may like to suggest something else/better!

I've been to both and if i had to compare them, it would be a definite no brainer, go to Edinburgh. The locals are friendly, the city is walkable, its gorgeous and there's so much to do. Be it taking some guided tours of the city, the haunted undercity tours, or just going to the castle and wandering about, it's amazing. I loved it there. :)

If you've already been to Dublin and have the chance to go somewhere else then why not go somewhere different?? There's STACKS to do in Edinburgh!! Bit hilly but you could go up and down the golden mile. Not sure if the castle or Holyrood are open but they could be, check it out. There's also Holyrood Park (I think that's the name, big hill, nice views, exercise required), and there are usually a few ghost tours in the evening, some of which take in the vaults. Scottish Parliament, there are art galleries and museums. Google to see what's on.
Er............ I think the only reason you'd not want to go to Edinburgh is the WEATHER. There's currently a LOT of snow up north so check out the weather forecast and the state of flights at the moment. We're talking bad bad winter weather here, -18 in a few parts!!

I'm not scared by weather - I'm from Iceland and have lived in Finland during winter. xD

I'm def. leaning towards Edinburgh now. My problem is mainly that I don't know so much about the city but I'm trying to catch up on Wiki. :) thanks for the advice!

Ooo I'm going to Iceland in March 8-) I don't think you'll have problems with the cold, but here it's a larger amount of snow than normal so they're not as prepared for it (more prepared than England but not for QUITE so much and so long a period of snow). Therefore airports may be closed, ice may affect transport and roads, and things may shut down because people are snowed in! So just be careful, read the news and weather reports and have fun 8-)

Yeah I'll definitely check the weather before I book the trip. :) Have fun in Iceland!

There's a place called Chocolate Soup near the Royal Mile which did very nice hot chocolate in 2007. I was in heaven, google it to check if it is still there!

I love Edinburgh, it's my favourite UK city.

And secondhand bookstores, there's an article here
