hello all!

i'm about to do a last minute flight booking and stuff (with departure in three days and duration of three days) to either Dublin or Edinburgh. the problem is that i can't choose.

Dublin:
i've been there before and so i've seen most of the things worth to see (i think), counting: st. patrick's cathedral, kilmainham gaol, the general post ( Read more... )

^what should i do in..., !question(s), scotland: edinburgh, ireland: dublin, ^where should i go (in...)

Been to both, Dublin recently, and Edinburgh about 5 years ago.

I'd say, go for Edinburgh.

You can see the castle, and there's TONS more to see. Not counting the surounding Scottish countryside. You'll defintily be occupied for however long you spend there.

I personally love Dublin - I spent a week there. But in my experince, once you've seen all of Dublin (the things you've listed being pretty much all of Dublin), thats about it. Paddywagon Tours (http://www.paddywagontours.com) runs a number of fantastic tours of places worth seeing outside of Dublin (Gaint's Causeway, Belfast, Ring of Kerry, Galway, Etc. Etc. Etc.) - so if your intrested in the rest of Ireland, I strongly recommend that. But if you want to stay in one city, then I'd say go for somwhere new.

Edinburgh, definitely. I've been there pretty recently, so I have some recommendations. If you're still looking for hostels, I stayed at High Street Hostel, which was pretty decent.

You can see both Edinburgh Castle (make sure you take the tour, it is very good) and Holyrood Castle.

You can't walk miss the lovely architecture, or go more than a couple of blocks without seeing a nice cafe, but I think Forest may have been my favorite. As everyone's said above, Chocolate Soup is utterly delicious (it's right by the Tron).

I highly recommend New Europe Tours' wonderful ( ... )

Agree on the recommendation to do the New Europe Tour- it was a fantastic intro to the city.

I stayed at both the High Street Hostel and the Castle Rock hostel- and I'd recommend the Castle Rock- it was a great place to stay, had lots of friendly backpackers.

If you were staying longer I would DEFINITELY recommend a trip with Macbackpackers to the highlands- but you're not, so you'll have to go back someday!

Also, from Edinburgh you can go and visit Rosslyn Chapel which you can get to in about 20 mins or so on a local bus. It's most famous (now) as being the church at the end of the Da Vinci code. It has amazing stone carvings. Be prepared, though, for the entire thing to be cased in a giant tin shed as part of ongoing restorations. The carvings inside are great though, and the tin shed has scaffolding which means you can walk up around the roof of the chapel!
