female middle aged protagonist in fantasy books yay! There needs more of them.

Have you read Caught in Crystal? The main character is a middle-aged inn keeper with two children who's called to go on a quest, and takes her kids with her. The plot itself is fairly straightforward, but the treatment of the family dynamics is unusual and good.

No, I hadn't! That does sound interesting, thanks for pointing me to it. Although I don't think I want to read books by Patricia Wrede right now, what with Mammothfail and all >_>;; I feel conflicted.

Yeah, I know, I almost added something about that :-(. It is awkward, and all. But I'm not willing to stop reading books just because the authors have said and done things I find unpalatable, although it does cast something of a shadow over them.

I have just finished reading one of Wrede's other books, set in the same world as Crystal, in which one (and only one) character, who has all of two lines, is described as "dark-skinned." I am now contemplating what sort of fanfiction epic could be written for that character, which strikes me as in some ways a more productive response to Mammothfail than not reading, although maybe that is just me. But I am lazy, and so unlikely to get beyond the plotting stage.

Voui, j'aime un peu moins Day watch aussi. Mais le troisième est vraiment bon !

I always come away with recs from your book reviews, which is awesome.

I tried something by Martha Wells (The Wizard Hunters, I think) and quit a few chapters in because it was not doing it for me, but I heard you say wonderful things about her, so I'm wondering if I should try again with a stand-alone.

Day Watch I've been meaning to read for ages, if I could find it at the library in Russian. The Dark Ones characters that it focuses on -- are these characters that were mentioned in Night Watch, or brand new ones?

I've been meaning to read Voices and Powers, too, for a long while. I really enjoyed Gifts, so glad to hear the series only gets stronger towards the end.

And, so, if I wanted to read about this Olenna Tyrell in space (actually, everything you say about that series sounds great to me), I should start with Foreigner?

The thing with Martha Wells is I'm never interested in her plot, and I find they always have pacing issues. However I almost always love her characters and world building. For me Wizard Hunters is great because of Tremaine if nothing else. That doesn't mean the book will be to the taste of everyone, of cours.

The first story in Day Watch is the same Dark One girl we saw in Night Watch. The second story has a brand new character. The third is mostly about Anton but also shows us another Dark One character although I forgot if he was in Night Watch or not.

I believe I already recced you Foreigner actually :) when I made this 'i'll rec you something' post and you asked for something with linguistic and I forgot what else. Yeap, that's where you should start ^^ check on the wikipedia if you get confused at the order of the books (the cover of the books themselves aren't all that useful).

What you say about Powers is exactly my reaction: the best, and it makes the other two look better. I was really caught in the magic of this one, and also liked the way it returned to some of her earlier themes: contrasting different kinds of societies and showing how none was perfect.

haha, I didn't really reach to that part, did I? I liked it. Enjoyed Cajeiri's PoV, liked the return to the East part and to Atevi politics in general. I thought it was a bit slow to start, but as usual it ended up being pretty steam powered speed when it went along.
