As for middle-aged female protagonists, well....30's isn't middle-aged, but Balsa in the Moribito books is thirty-something and tough as nails. It's a prose book written in Japanese, and it's been made into an anime, but I just like the books better. Somehow they made Balsa too "pretty," which I feel takes away from the appeal of the character. Also very interesting gender-study-wise, for reasons that get a bit spoilerish. Like I said, 30's isn't middle-aged, but you hardly ever see a female protag over 25, so I thought it was notable.
I loved Seirei no Moribito the series. I admit I wouldn't have considered Balsa as middle aged as such, however she's still a very cool and kick ass female character.
