Cardiff, Wales
Troubled, the Doctor landed the TARDIS on Roald Dahl Plass. He hoped it was nothing, but when Donna had been unable to reach Martha on the phone, he'd had a funny feeling in his gut. As the last time he'd spoken to his former companion she had mentioned a visit to Torchwood, he figured it was as good a place as any to start looking for her.
After several minutes of wandering, he and Donna found themselves in the tiny tourist office Jack had told him acted as a front for Torchwood. Finding it unexpectedly empty, he went to the back wall and activated the hidden door with his sonic screwdriver. That their arrival hadn't already been greeted by an eager Jack and Martha only served to increase his worry.
Ambling into the lift, the Doctor waited for Donna to draw up beside him before hitting the 'down' button. When the doors opened at the bottom and a large cog door slid back in front of them, neither could restrain their reactions.
“Oh my God,” Donna squealed, “they work in a sewer!”
“Oh yes” the Doctor absent-mindedly stated as he glanced around “this place has Jack stamped all over it.”
Stepping further into the hub, they noticed something else.
“Seems awfully quiet though,” the Doctor noted. “And messy. Too messy, even for Jack. Something isn’t right here.”
When a door opened and a small, glowing, silvery alien appeared, his suspicions were confirmed.
“I should have known.” At the words, the silvery alien looked up. Seeing the Doctor standing there, what passed for a smile crossed its face. The Doctor was relieved at the apparent sign of recognition; it saved him a lengthy explanation that he had given to too many members of this species already.
“What have you lost this time?” he asked good-naturedly.
* * * *
Standing over the comatose bodies of seven people, the Doctor and Donna waited amusedly for them to regain consciousness.
“I...”
“But...”
“You...”
Confused looks abounded as the seven people woke up, looking around at each other.
“Does anyone else remember being in a trashy romance novel or was that just me?” Jack voiced cheekily.
“It wasn't just you” Gwen responded, a little dazed.
Noticing the strange man and woman leaning amused on the desk across from them, Owen turned his attention to more current issues.
“Who the hell are you?”
His sharp question drawing the attention of the others to their visitors, Owen's question was immediately answered from two sources simultaneously.
“Doctor?”
“Hold on, the Doctor?” Ianto queried, his gaze darting between Jack, Martha and the Doctor. At Jack's sharp nod, Ianto cast an assessing eye over the Time Lord who had shaped Jack's personality.
“And Donna,” Donna interjected, feeling a little ignored.
Standing up, Jack offered her his hand. “Captain Jack Harkness, pleased to meet you.” A collective eye roll ensued; Jack could always be relied upon to flirt.
Turning round, Jack introduced the rest of the team, who were struggling to their feet.
“Doctor, I'd like you to meet my team.” Pointing as he went, Jack travelled along the line. “Miss Toshiko Sato, computer genius.”
Tosh smiled. The Doctor thought for a moment, remembering where he'd met her before.
“Space pigs!” He clicked his fingers. “I knew I'd met you before!”
Tosh was a little confused. She remembered a man calling himself 'The Doctor', but this man looked nothing like him. Noticing her puzzled look, the Doctor quickly figured out its cause. “Oh yes, you met me before my last regeneration. I'll explain about that later.”
Casting amused glances at the Doctor, Jack cleared his throat and carried on with the introductions.
“Dr Owen Harper, Torchwood medic and resident wise-ass.”
Owen made to complain, then, realising the truth of the statement, decided against it. The Doctor nodded at him warmly.
“My second in command, former cop Gwen Cooper and her fiancé Rhys Williams.”
Again the Doctor searched his memory. This face looked familiar too.
“Are you from an old Cardiff family Miss Cooper?” he quizzed as he shook her hand. “Because I think I've met one of your ancestors.”
Confused, she nodded her response. Seeing the questions in her eyes and the impatience in Jack, the Doctor evaded. “I'll tell you about it later.”
Turning his attention back to Jack, the Doctor saw him relax as his gaze fixed upon the final member of his team.
“And this,” Jack gestured with a dramatic sweep of his arm, “is Ianto Jones. Ianto keeps this place running, makes the best coffee known in the universe and,” he paused to wink at Donna. “he looks great in a suit.”
Ianto shot him a long-suffering look. “I do believe we've talked about this, Sir.”
The affection in the glance told the Doctor everything he needed to know about the relationship between Jack and Ianto. It was the look in Jack's eyes that really shocked him. Had the wild Captain Jack actually fallen in love?
Stepping forward again, he shook Ianto's hand cordially.
“Nice to meet you, Ianto Jones.”
“Ok, so now that that's all out of the way, mind explaining what the hell is going on here?” Jack demanded. “One minute I was walking through the hub, and the next I was riding across the countryside in the 19th century, with no memory of my life here. What happened?”
