Having a cold sucks man. But not too badly. I noticed it coming on late Saturday night, but didn't think much of the gicky-throat feeling. Sunday morning was a bit different however. I managed to sleep through my alarm and when 10am came by (when church starts) I woke up, thought hard about whether I could actually get out of bed, decided against ( Read more... )

Yep, there's lots of violence and a fair bit of sex. So what?

I know it's not something you worry about, but a big goal in my life is to be more godly and please God in what I do. Many times the things I do are neutral towards that goal, but I don't know if this is neutral or negative. It certainly doesn't sound positive. All the positive things I could have gotten from the film seem fulfilled in reading the graphic novel - which I've done! All this would add is more violence and sex running around in my head after the film has ended.

David and Margaret gave this film very good reviews, but I don't know if seeing an excellent film for gratuitous and graphic sex and violence is a reasonable payoff for me.

It's fun, though. That's the point in seeing it. You can't get the same experience from a graphic novel. It's not supposed to enrich your life, just provide some entertainment. Don't overthink it.

It entertainment worth it? Should I go through life ignorant and apathetic about the consequences my decisions have by choosing to not "over"think it? What experience am I seeking by watching the film as opposed to reading the novel?

Why shouldn't all we do serve to enrich our lives? Would it be better if I were just a pawn to the entertainment industry?
If it is not enriching me, then I am paying them money for a couple of hours of my life to be used by them for no good purpose. I am being used by them. If I choose to do something for my enrichment, then I am using them for my purposes, which is much better in my estimation.

Is the pursuit of fun worth it?

hm, I've been sick all weekend as well... who sent us this nasty bug?

I took a 24-hour thingy today to alleviate symptoms; I'm not looking forward to when it wears off!

can't you take another one?
I took two different kinds of tablets: cold&flu tablets, and a nasal decongestant. It was a good combo, but probably didn't help with the funny slightly light headed feeling I had through most of the day.

Oh how I wish I didn't watch too much sexual scenes already. There are great movies with some sexual scenes in it. I've been trying to not watch too much movies and only selectively watch the good ones. I won't watch something like Sweeny Todd, oh no it has lots of blood scenes. It's interesting that you put God first even in the smallest matters like watching movies. I do that too, but sometimes I don't, which is a bad thing.

I wish I put God first more often though. Sometimes I don't either :P

I'm ok with some sex and I'm ok with violence. It's the combination of the two I'm uneasy about

I saw it on the weekend with my parents. I didn't mind it. But my parents who haven't read the book were a bit confused. The book is much better (as is often the case). I thought the violence in the film was mild compared to the violence I've seen in other films, and the sex and nudity was fine if not a bit boring. Seriously. It was totally IKEA erotica as Dan and Laurie bounced up and down on each other with bored looks on their faces. I've never had sex but it has to be more interesting and humourous than people in tv and film land make it out to be. Even making out with Kristi when we were together was more fun and equally intimate than the dullness that exists in that department in tv and film land.

(Just finished watching season 7 of West Wing last week and I'm a little amazed and bemused by the secular attitude to sex on that show too. Well, I'm not that surprised since the writers aren't Christians, and it's still a great show regardless, but it's just... just different, to how I want to live my life regarding sex and love)
