Not only had he dropped the soccer team that afforded her a free two hours in the afternoon (and that had ended with some rather large players ragging on her for 'stealing' their star player, but now he was invading her mornings -- and more specifically, her eight a.m. quiet, private breakfast in the kitchen that would otherwise be abandoned. Granted, she'd seen corpses that looked more awake and he'd made a beeline for the coffee pot, but here he was in her eight o'clock private time.

She waited till he'd had a cup or two in him before prompting, "I thought you hated my coffee."

James directed a bleary-eyed, still sleepy glare in her general direction and returned, "It's strong enough to power a nuclear generator -- and still not enough to get me going this morning."

"So why are you up this early? It's about three or four hours too early for you, Prince Sleeping Beauty."

Her weak attempt at humor fell flat. With his head in the fridge, apparently hunting down something to eat (he'd learned early and on the business end of a fork that her food was sacred and not to be stolen), she couldn't even tell if he'd reacted at all. "If it was my choice, believe me, I'd still be asleep. There's a reason all my classes have been in the afternoon."

She raised an eyebrow sardonically. "Sure that late-rising isn't a family trait bleeding through?"

This time the glare had improved as he plopped a loaf of bread and a jar of jelly on the marble-topped kitchen island. "Very funny."

"I try. So why are you up so early anyway? You said it wasn't by choice."

"How the hell do you stand to be up so early?" he complained instead of answering. "We just got home a few hours ago."

"Easy. I haven't gone to bed yet. Why are you up, boytoy?"

Biting in quite possibly the sloppiest jelly sandwich she'd ever laid eyes on, he answered, "Gyps was looking for you. Nothing important or life-threatening. I think she just needed some girl-talk or something. There. Message delivered. It's off my case now."

Girl-talk? And Gypsy was coming to her? The hell? Well, she supposed she could chalk it up to the hazards of being each other's only female friend of a similar age. Still, this would take some mental working up to.

"So are you going to keep being an early bird, Jamey?" asked Claudia, pushing the girl-talk idea out of her mind for the moment.

The dirty look she received was answer aplenty.
