He sees them in his dreams, hanging from the edge. Below them lies oblivion, an infinite blackness that swallows all and spits nothing back out, not even bones stripped bare.
Tifa scrambles for a better hold and cries out, "Cloud, save me!" Her eyes are wide and desperate, and the rocks beneath her hands are starting to crumble.
Aerith tosses him Holy, telling him to "Save the Planet." The small piece of materia bounces twice before rolling to a stop at his feet.
Zack looks at him and doesn't say anything, doesn't ask him to choose. "Love ya Spikey," Zack says and lets go.
He sees them in his dreams and knows he's supposed to choose, but he's never asked to be a hero, never been brave or courageous or strong of heart. He's only ever known one sure thing and, as he jumps over the edge, that's enough.

For a moment, when he sees green eyes again, he thinks it's time to give up. It would be so nice to just let go, hasn't he done enough? It isn't like he has any great desire to live anyway, not in a world that holds nothing. But the weight of the world on his shoulders anchors him and the weight of his life surrounds him and he knows he can't.
"Stay there in my memory!" he shouts, asks.
Because my memories are all I have left.
