But I've come to the realization that there are a lot of places in this country and the world where I'd like to travel, and if I keep spending all my money and vacation time going to San ( Read more... )

Once again, this is why you need to get involved in the dancing scene. Then you could crash with someone you'd met at an exchange, have them chauffeur you around to dances and maybe even get a tour guide out of it. I'd only met Kent once before he hosted me in SF and gave me a grand tour!

Oh yeah, consider San Francisco.

And consider going somewhere off season, to make travel cheaper.

Check out that couch surfing site. Here is the profile of an acquaintance who has been traveling for a couple years now, and I think you can trust his evaluation of people he's stayed with:

Of those options, I'd recommend Austin. I've got a few friends there who tell me it's a pretty excellent city just to walk around and look at, so even if you fob off this expensive and unexciting festival, you won't be short of stuff to do. Plus it has the weakest Cons list of any of your other choices.

I can't imagine you not at the con. I mean I know I've never been, but you've always seemed to me like one of the people who make it special for a whole lot of others. It'd be like sex without pizza. But out of your other options I'd go with the Toronto since it includes the NY, NJ side trip. So thats like 3 vacations in 1.
