As the mom of 3 (two are girls: 18 and 15 yo) I try so hard to impress this on them: "Be careful, don't walk alone in the dark" etc., etc.
And they say, "I'm not scared." and "Men shouldn't mess with me." etc.
I don't want them to be fearful and meek, but I also want them to be cautious because, like you say, the reality is one HAS to be careful.
I'm so glad your story turned out well. Knowing one isn't alone definitely lifts the spirits.
I enjoyed your entry!

They are right, although a bit different from how they intended. Men shouldn't mess with them.
Women should not have to be afraid and carry the burden of having to keep themselves safe. But we do.
Send them to a self-defence class if they are at all interested. Krav Maga is good for this.

This is a truth that I so very badly wish was false. I loved this little vignette. We all need to look out for one another more!

This was great - a good way to meet a fellow traveler in life and a possible long-term friend.

Unfortunate that women should have to weigh up their surroundings instead of just acting on impulse and doing as they please... but, I'm glad you made a connection! :-)
