otw elections: sound and fury signifying...ego

There's a big ol' kerfuffle going on right now re: OTW elections. I'm mostly keeping my head down because that's what I do. But here, completely unsolicited, is my unofficial opinion: I love doing what I do for the Org, and I love the committee I work with. Systems is chock full of stellar people, starting with my co-chair (whom I posted about ( Read more... )

Totally out of the loop on this mess and kind of glad about that.

I'm sad to see it upsetting friends though! You're the second or third person on my flist to make an allusion to whatever is happening. I will just go back to baking my mother-in-law a birthday cake now.

My mom made me a chocolate with choco/coconut frosting once. three layers. in the shape of a teddy bear. ultimate.

I've donated to the OTW, and I have work on the archive. I know khellekson who has co-edited the journal for the OTW. I feel like I should know more about it than I do. That said, I'm not sure 1) if I have a vote, and 2) what to do with it. Though I think my best call is that if I do, I should let someone vote for me by proxy who is more familiar with all it all works.

Note so self: figure that shit out before election time.

if you have the time, the very best thing to do, imho? is to go to the elections website Q&A section and read straight from the candidates themselves. that tells you who they are and how they think. anything else, people's opinions about the candidates, stories about events that happened, is all hearsay and pretty biased.

that's just my two cents. you don't have to read very much to get an idea. and having worked a little for the org, you probably know a little about what might have kept you more active, so maybe someone's ideas will ping off you? who knows.

and I might say, it's nice having you in my space, wpa. :)

Thank you for this info. I put a little blurb about the AO3 recruitment on Squidge's Facebook page, but have to admit I'm in the same boat as wpadmirer; I've no clue about elections or stuff, even though I've donated multiple times this year... ::hugs::

There's a whole lot of raeging going on, and I'm not disrespecting volunteers and ex-volunteers' reasons for being burned out or angry or feeling like their contributions weren't valued or whatever. Everyone has their own stories. But some of the stuff the campaigners are promising has repercussions for existing volunteers that would just be a ridiculous burden on us, so if a new board member comes to me and suddenly demands I man a Q&A RSA feed to answer every silly question end users come up with on why we named a switch after my dead cat, or why archive performance is slow on Tuesdays at midnight when backups are running, I will throw down my shovel and go write porn. :D

Thank you, btw, for donating. you are a peach. but you already knew that. :)

Gah! I've been squished by RL this year and haven't done any testing AT ALL, so am *completely* out of the loop. I donate, though, so I guess I have a vote? You know, at this point, I'd be just as happy to proxy my vote to someone *is* in the loop and knows what will make everyone's life easiest. Is that even possible? Also -- biggest &heart;s to you for everything you're doing. It can be timesucking, I know, so *hugs* from me.

aw, thanks, bubba. I know what it's like when RL kicks your ass.

the last day to assign a proxy was 11/2. :( if you want to talk, my addy is in my profile. you do still have time to ponder imponderables. :D

polls will be open for 48 hours starting:
http://timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?month=11&day=16&year=2011&hour=12&min=0&sec=0&p1=0

(pick your time zone.)

starting on the 9th they will make the links with the logins and stuff viable so you can check to make sure you can get in to vote when the time comes. http://elections.transformativeworks.org/timeline

would be a shame to waste your voice.

I really hope we can make improvements without making extra work for people who are already overworked. I am in awe of all the work that Systems already do, and I hope we can get more people to help you through the training workgroup. I'm also hoping that we can get other technical people to communicate more of what goes on behind the scenes - transparency doesn't necessarily mean making people write stuff or answer stuff when their natural talent isn't public communication.

Thank you for your work, and I'm sorry if I've given the impression that I would make lots more work for you.

hi, Jenny. I did try to be non-specific in my rant (except where the personality was too obvious), and I hope you didn't take my words personally. I do think some of your ideas would result in an added burden, but I don't think any candidate can please all of the people. I've enjoyed working with you ( ... )

I didn't take it personally - I'm getting a lot of practice at that in this election debate :)

I think some parts of Systems would be interesting to the public, but not all, and it should be managed carefully so as not to make too much extra work. As you suggest, I'd much rather the writing up be done by a Board liaison or Comms liaison if no-one in a committee particularly wants to do it, rather than making people do work that they don't enjoy or that doesn't suit their skills.

Do you have any bug numbers handy or more details on the CiviCRM bugs that are the biggest headache for Systems? I have an idea brewing in my head about using their Make-It-Happen system to push for it to get fixed, but would need a bit more info to figure out if it's feasible or not.
