H50 Ep Recap: Loa Aloha (1x18)

First of all, the title...a little bit of irony there, I think. ( Loa Aloha )

Thank you! I had such a blast doing it. I plan to try to catch up slowly on past eps.

Great recap, and LOVED the selection of pics to support your points. :-)

Somehow I knew Danny would give terrific big-people hugs, too

Now I really, REALLY wanna' see Steve on the receiving end of one of those full-body, arms totally enfolding, hugs! (Though if H50 plays out like Sentinel, we'll see Steve and Danny hug everyone and their dog EXCEPT each other). >:-(

Though at least with Dane Cook's coloring, we can squint and envision Steve in there easily enough... ;-)

(didn't Jim hug his little guppy after he ate the bad pizza?)

Hmm... yeah, he did kind of gather semi-conscious, Golden-dosed Blair up into his arms and curl protectively around him, but when it came to actual hugs -- I think the closest we ever got was arm across shoulder / hand around neck 'side-hug,' for lack of a better term. (Which we often see Alex doing with Scott in photo ops).

We got a good bit of hand on back (sometimes shoulder level, sometimes small of back) from both guys, and RB's always been pretty tactile -- pats, grabs, etc; we just never saw the full-on enfolding two-armed hug, at least not between Jim and Blair.

It'll be interesting to see how long it takes for Danny to include Steve (and Chin, and Kono, for that matter) in whatever mental category he reserves for people he deems hug-worthy. ;-) (That, of course, assumes TPTB will allow such a hug to be included in an episode).

yeah, I don't think you can really argue there wasn't enough physical contact b/w Jim and Blair. :)) on both sides.

this team seems pretty tight, and if (hopefully) filming goes on, over time I bet we will see more contact on-screen as well.

I've been really enjoying the overall tones of the last few episodes. Steve and Danny hang out on days off, they're obviously comfortable enough to laugh and joke with Danny's family, the touching is so much extra bonus. It sews the seeds of family and teamness that I adore so much.

I normally don't enjoy family drama in shows, but family is such a key component to Danny's character and it's been nice to see how his Grace, Rachel and now his brother have been used to flesh out him out. I do hope that this is not the start of a trend where Danny gets all the meaty emotional arcs, while Steve’s arc involving the death of his parents tends to be all action. (Not that I mind too much I hope I’m articulating myself n away that’s not negative, but hopeful. In episode 12 we did get both action!Steve and tender!Steve with the rescue of his sister, but I hope we get more quiet character building moments as we move forward as well ( ... )

I think they (the producers) are thinking of the team as Steve's ohana. He does look after them. But yeah, I do hope he gets some real arcs. I like Mary and hope to see her again.

Very interesting comment, Kristen.

From your mouth to God's ear! It certainly looks that way, and I'd say -- based on things Alex has said, like in that early vid interview with E! Online's Kristin Dos Santos -- that Steve's got the majority of his eggs in the Danny basket when it comes to his new family. He is majorly, MAJORLY invested in his relationship with Danny. While the team gives him a chance to have a family again, Danny gives him something new -- a brother he never had, plus a way to reconnect with his father through watching Danny interact with Grace.

The fact that the team IS Steve's de facto family at this point, and that family is a major aspect of this show (and the fact that the network and producers all seem to realize how very, very central that team as family / Danny as brother idea is to the show's success) makes me a tad less apprehensive about the season-end spoilers and situations Alex talked about in that USA Today interview.

Lovely recap! There were so many wonderful moments in this ep, and so many heartbreaking moments, and it makes me all flaily just to think about it. I love how Steve was THERE for Danny every step of the way.

Is it just me or is Alex looking a little tired here?

I was thinking the same thing. I just want to set that boy on the couch and give him a cup of tea. He's looking a bit worn out.

As you've watched it 3 times to my 2, does Danny call Steve Honey, when he leans into Steve to point out the Feds? I'm sure he does but others thought he just says 'hey'.

I think that was a clearing his throat "hey". :( the foley definitely cleaned it up for the real ep. (compared to the youtube clip.)

but again...squinting. :)))
