RIP Robin Williams 1951-2014

Aug 11, 2014 23:21

I will never forget the sketch from Reality...What a Concept in which Robin Williams basically ad libbed an entire Shakespearean soliloquy about 3 Mile Island -- the man's mouth was hooked into his brain so perfectly, so completely, that his off-the-wall creativity ran off his tongue like paisley carpet. "Aye, the plant doth glow in the night like ( Read more... )

eulogies, life

I'm amazingly sad right now. I've seen comments calling him a selfish loser, a coward, a bastard for this and it hurts. No, this wonderful man lost his courageous battle with depression. It is a battle and it does take courage to fight it, every day.

Rest, Mr. Williams, rest. Put down your sword and shield, the battle is done, and you need fight no more. Rest.

I saw some posts like that too, Mischief, and it was upsetting. People can be such a-holes. Go on Tumblr and you'll find lovely tributes and nothing but respect.

Here's my post about him, which includes a link to the US article in which many celebrities are expressing their grief and love for him.

I've suffered from depression for many years and lost a friend to suicide some years ago too -- anybody who thinks you can just suck it up has never experienced it and has no empathy either.

Hugs.

Thank you for the link, April. I have Bipolar II with chronic depressive episodes so I know whereof you speak. I'm glad so many people will remember Mr. Williams with kindness. He was a treasure.

Glad to help. Most of Good Morning America today was a tribute to him -- they said several times that rather than questioning or discussing what happened they wanted to provide a tribute and celebrate his life and the love he gave to so many.

I love the story about him going to visit Christopher Reeve shortly after his horse riding accident -- he pretended to be a crazy doctor coming in to perform a colonoscopy. Reeve said it was the first time he'd laughed and that he knew then that he would be okay.

I've suffered from depression most of my life, partly due to ADHD which wasn't diagnosed until my late 40s, along with experiencing many losses of loved ones from a young age. I still go up and down, despite being on medication and am not in the best frame of mind for learning about Robin Williams' passing.

(Not to upset you, but if you do go on Tumblr, make sure you block Westboro Baptist church references.)

Sad, too, but somehow not surprised. The brightest flames often burn out too soon.
