You're like the 5th person to say UTI, so I'm going to make a vet appointment post haste.

You realize you can't punish a cat, right? They don't understand it.

Also, get a new mattress. If you can't eliminate every single trace of urine, they'll think it's OK to pee there.

Good luck!

Definitely get her checked out for urinary/kidney problems. If that isn't an issue, then I suggest Feliway. It's available as a spray or as an aerosal plug-in at Petco, etc. It releases a pheromone that relaxes stressed cats and is a useful treatment for peeing in unwanted places. I strongly advise against "spanking" or "beating" cats, as they interpret it as play behavior which is reinforcing rather than punishing. Confining them or witholding attention are much better punishments. Good luck in dealing with this!

Honesty, unless you catch them doing it, punishment isn't going to do any good. Are they fixed? If not, get them fixed, it might help (if the litter box was clean, the *only* time my cats peed on anything is if they were in heat).

Other then that, very much agree on the vet check for UTIs. If you see what looks like sparkles or crystals where they peed, then it's *definitely* a UTI - and males are much more likely suspects for UTIs then females.

I second buddycat.

I finally got a clue on day #3 of bad peeing behavour from one of my male cats when he jumped up on my lap and pee'd in it. To the vet he went. Urinary tract blockage... common for males (the crystals gather instead of passing). It appears that peeing on things is a way of saying something is not right. Another form of communication.
