I thought Obama's acceptance speech was amazing, and while I didn't agree with everything he said (and while I remain hugely disappointed with his choice of Biden, who, beyond being the consummate Beltway insider who believes in nothing more strongly than politics as usual, is impressed that Obama is "clean" and embarrassed by his wife's education ( Read more... )

I am responding to this latest round of asshattery by drinking a lot. Is that wrong?

Wait, are you trying to say that women don't vote with their vaginas?

Women just can't be trusted with something as important as the vote, y'all. They do really stupid things with it.

That's pretty much been the media narrative all year, hasn't it? Damn. Talk about depressing.

I become more blackly amused at all the talk about our post-feminist society with each new wave of it, and god knows it's nowhere near stopping. As long as the media can find one non-Republican woman who didn't vote for Obama for feminist reasons, whether they are related to Hillary Clinton or not, all women and all feminists will to be blame. Really, shame on us.

I do, too, but honestly, I don't have a whole lot of faith that it'll get better when it does. If Obama loses, it will be the fault of women and feminists. If Obama wins, it will be despite the better efforts of women and feminists, thus making it unfair (and racist, according to some) for them to criticize or disagree with any of his policies, while Republicans blame the stupid worthless VPILF for losing McCain the election. I know this is what happens with progress, and I know a whole lot of the huge increase in overt misogyny relates directly to people being terrified about seeing a woman in power, but somehow that doesn't make it any easier to take.

Thank you for helping me put my finger on why I've been down since I read about his choice.

I've really reached the point where it's hard for me to watch the news at all or read blogs that aren't explicitly feminist, which sucks pretty spectacularly. It's the whole thing with SPN fandom on a much bigger, much more important scale -- I spent a lot of time thinking I mostly frequented woman-friendly spaces that wouldn't tolerate, let alone cheer for, misogyny, and then the rock got turned over and I realized just how spectacularly wrong I was. And now, even when it's not directly in evidence, I know it's there, and I can't forget it.
