I suppose it helps for purposes of the story to ignore that cats can perfectly well be left alone overnight.

btw, read more of your modern AU. Does my heart good that they're back together, but... I have such a marshmallow heart, and you got the HURT of it right, and what I want to say is, you're an excellent writer, and I admire the hell out of those stories, but it would be pushing it to say I liked them! Which means, I think, that you got it right.
