Thoughts on Trump (jumbled and unorganized)

Nov 16, 2016 10:11

Walking this morning, I was thinking how its still a bit unbelievable that Trump won the election. Its weird that he got away with so many comments that would have sunk other political campaigns. But it's probably what Angie says: he says so many crazy, stupid things, that people just ignore it. I also think he really benefited from the media, even ( Read more... )

I actually think its very funny that he won basically due to poor people.

That's somewhat misleading statement:

If you compare these results to 2012 (or 2008), its clear that Trump has appeal towards poor people, much more than a typical Republican candidate. While, cities and minorities voted for Clinton, poor, rural whites voted for Trump.

Versus 2012, Trump is +6% in incomes under $30k and lost percentages (3-7%) in the $50k to $250k+ categories.

Versus 2008, Trump is +16% (!!) in under $30k. (The other breakdowns use different brackets, but those results didn't really change significantly.)

It'd be interesting to look at 2004 since its an actual election that Republicans won, but Wikipedia didn't have a good breakdown.

Sure, that's what happened.

It's not like the poor voted Trump, however, it's just this election cycle they voted Trump more than they usually do for Republican candidates. Which is still less than the number of poor people who voted Clinton.

He won because of his appeal to poor voters, specially poor, uneducated, rural white voters.

Its not an absolute statement about poor voters, but compared to other Republicans, he appeals more to poor voters and less to wealthy voters.

I haven't read much (depression/denial) but headlines make it sound like they're actually going ahead with a wall ("or maybe a fence" - Trump). Then there's something an article mentioned in passing as if it was no big thing was that they're going to push for a registry of Muslims.

And if they repeal Obamacare, I'll have to pay for birth control again!!!

On 60 Minutes, he said he'd still build a wall (maybe a fence in some places), but I just imagine the undertaking will be significant, so I don't know if it'll actually be done. A registry of Muslims seems pretty scary, so hopefully it was just wild speculation or something.

Isn't birth control not even that expensive? I don't know.

Not that expensive ≠ free. You know how much I love money.

What about possible tax breaks for someone who loves money?

I agree. And I'd say he's much worse than not dignified and not presidential. He's down right clownish and dangerous with much of his rhetoric. Its like all of his speeches are even comically bad or scary.
